You are right.  We checked RHEL5.3 and 5.4.  They ship with 5.0.45 and 5.0.77 respectively and none of those have profiling support.  So it seems that RedHat build the server binary without this functionality.

I have to consider this a stupid mistake on their side.   Basically I think they forgot to update their build script with this ./configure parameter.  Official MySQL RPM builds from here ftp://mirrors.dotsrc.org/mysql/Downloads/ would work fine (I would use the RPM-'glibc23'-compiled server for recent distros supporting RPM installation).  But if your host does not want to install software that is not official  RedHat software, neither you or we can do anything about it.

Thanks for checking Peter. It does sound like basic functionality which should be enabled by default. I think this used to be enabled on my host and at some point recently got disabled otherwise I'd have probably noticed it before now.

    This: cat /etc/redhat-release

    Gives: CentOS release 5.4 (Final)

I was previously using MySQL 5.0.87-community

    I'm now using 5.1.40.

As mentioned, both MySQL versions had/have SHOW PROFILES disabled. So if this was a mistake, it's something they carried over between two releases many months apart. Sounds like a policy/decision. A stupid one at that.

I'm having this same issue. I get the “feature is disabled” warning too when I run a basic select statement.

I asked my webhost, WiredTree, to enable this option. But they said it's part of the RPM so they can't. So I asked them to upgrade mysql from 5.0 to 5.1.

They just updated it to 5.1.40. I no longer get the warning message. But if I do “SHOW VARIABLES LIKE '%profil%';” It tells me “PROFILING: OFF” so presumably it's still disabled, just that sqlyog now detects/ignores it.

I don't think I've experienced this issue using Sqlyog to connect to any other databases/webhosts so my question is, how unusual is it to not have this enabled? Is it anything to be concerned about?

    Thanks.

    @PeterLaursen

Just a few tid bits on your post…

I'm British and I consider myself more a part of Europe than I do America. But obviously the UK has a strong bond with the US given we share the same language. It's easy enough to pick faults with the US, especially with the previous Bush admin which I despised, their arrogance being an obvious flaw, but I value the US above most other countries (Europe aside).

With the Dashboard widgets. They work fine in the UK.

With Apple being arrogant, I'd tend to agree with you. And it's something that has concerned me and even delayed my adoption of the Mac over the years (I had been on the verge of switching several times over the years). I don't like how they treat their customers in terms of valuing them as human beings. For example they havent implemented copy/paste on the iPhone yet (time and time again I'd have found this useful) despite being criticized about it repeatedly by customers and the media. I don't like how they've discarded some iPhone apps which “duplicate already present functionality” which was nonsense. I don't like how typically Macbook memory upgrade options on their website has consistently over the years been nothing short of a scam, charging 3 to 4 times retail. Which meant either beginners got ripped off, and the rest of us had the burden of ordering the memory separately and opening the Mac on day one when it should have been a more realistic price to begin with. Then there is the keyboard on their laptops, which is poor in my opinion – The UK enter key is tiny which is annoying for programmers who press it at the end of every line, there's no Page up/Down or Begin/End keys, which I make heavy use of, no hash key, other missing keys, tiny scrunched up arrow keys. Solution is simply to take a look at Vaio keyboards (or most other laptop keyboards for that matter) and simply add an extra row of keys on the right-hand side.

Anyhow, I could go on, and I've spoke my mind in more detail on the net in the past. So, why have I switched to the Mac recently?

Firstly, Windows. Which I've grown to hate more and more over the years. Windows XP looks like a Fisher Price childrens toy – the default colours of the taskbar, windows and background is laughable. Then there is the general lack of common sense with interface design which is evident all over the place. I had to setup Vista recently and what a horrible experience. Firstly I couldnt get it connected to a wireless LAN, which evidentially sounds like the same problem that Stephen Fry ranted about in his Twitter feed recently to much acclaim. I eventually got it connected, but given every other device I've connected to the network worked flawlessly there's no excuse for this basic feature not to work all the time. Then there is Microsoft's lack of innovation – all they do is copy from Apple. And they really do. Much to their embarrassment when Apple highlighted them in one of their keynotes when they put up “microsoft start your photocopiers” then later Apple said “we didn't mean it” then has side-by-side slides showing all the blatant rip-offs by Microsoft.

For all their flaws, Apple have the best research and development out there by a mile. And I like it when a company strives for perfection rather than copy other companies, acquire others, and milk everybody for every penny they're worth. Apple can seem a little power crazed. But look at the result. Unbox a Mac computer and it's a vastly different experience. The Mac (rather than being US centric!) has an opening sequence welcoming everybody, in all the world's major languages! This is a nice touch. And the rest of the setup is just as polished. I found it much easier and smoother to setup than Vista, and I've been a Windows user all my life! (aside from university years where I only used UNIX). The hardware is a no nonsense affair, there are NO stickers whatsoever on the laptop, there's no stupid stickers telling you whats inside the machine you just bought, there's no Windows product key stickers underneath, it's just clean, beautifully designed, no bullshit, no screwed together plastic panels like on a Vaio i recently setup for someone, no bundled crapware and useless stuff I didnt ask for, again which caused me issues on the Vaio i setup recenly because the trial virus scanner didnt uninstall cleanly. Then when you boot up into the desktop the Mac is ready to be used, while Vista is throwing notification messages up warning you about all kinds of crap instead of just shutting up and getting on with its job. The list goes on and on, and Microsoft have copied the Mac in several ways but still manage to make it more annoying. the UAC got turned off pretty quick.

So in short, Apple have a lot going for them. Their interface is WAY superior to Windows. And that includes the default apps and even third party apps. Everything is so much cleaner and less in-your-face.

As for the iPhone. It's head and shoulders above every other mobile device out there, by a mile. And this is coming from a former Symbian developer and long time Symbian/EPOC fan. Nokia took Symbian and mutilated it, Sony Ericsson didnt do much better with UIQ, Windows Mobile was a joke etc. The iPhone has shaken up the smartphone world and for good reason. Everybody else did an extremely poor job.

Just to finish. Apple arent the only arrogant company. Microsoft do a pretty good job of it too. I had to uninstall Office 2008 Home edition on the Mac because they actively cripple Entourage even if it has a valid key for Exchange use. And Microsoft replied to me saying they couldn't help and to check their FAQ (useless and they dont care basically) even though this screwed up policy has caught many others out and Microsoft are fully aware.

So while Apple have flaws, they're nowhere near as big as Microsofts. Apple have a lot going for them and their market share growth is reflecting that. Now is a good time to be embracing the Mac platform, both users and developers 😉 And incidentally the developer tools are better for Mac too. Microsoft's setup is a convoluted mess while Apple's is a focused set of core tools (or at least according to a hard core Windows developer who tried out the Mac tools).

    1. I haven't had any crashes till now. Been using it daily for a week but I'm using it very lightly

    2. I'm able to connect to local datbases without any problem. Why don't you try using the community edition and put it through its paces ?

Thanks. I don't think the community edition supports the ssh/sync tools, at least last time I checked. Besides as i mentioned I'm already a Sqlyog Enterprise user and I extended it for another year. When I get around to installing Crossover Mac (if I buy it) I'll share my experience.

It's a pity you wont do a Mac version. A few years ago it seemed like you were looking into it but looks like that fell through! I setup Vista recently and it's like night and day compared with the Mac OS. the Mac is so much more polished and it allows you to get on with stuff. Vista (and Microsoft apps in general) find it hard to go 5 mins without nagging you about something (especially the out of the box experience). And my impression of Linux (I tried out Ubuntu) was the UI really needs work. It looks like a hack job. But each to their own. We each see different pros/cons i guess.

I'll check out the link you sent me. I've paid for another year to sqlyog. I might try it in VMware. I signed up to the free copy of Crossover Mac when they had a promotion but never got my serial so I'll pester them for it. Presumably it'll be lighter on resources seeing as its not actually running Windows, like WINE.

Will be interested to know how well Sqlyog Enterprise works using a WINE or equivalent. Those that have been using Sqlyog like this, can you comment on how well it performs, eg:

    – Stability. Any crashes?

    – Connecting to local MySQL database (installed on Mac OS, not through WINE)

    – Connecting to a remote database through SSH

    – Syncing structure and data between local and remote databases.

    Thanks!

I've recently switched to the Mac. Previously I used Sqlyog Enterprise. I let it lapse on assumption I'd switch to Navicat on the Mac. However, after spending an hour with Navicat I want Sqlyog back! With Navicat I do prefer the interface, but it's less stable (I experienced one crash and one hang with Navicat) and the structure/data sync tools in Sqlyog work MUCH MUCH MUCH better. I'm currently pulling my hair out with Navicat.

To give a quick overview. To test out the sync tools I used the database of a test installation of ExpressionEngine. Using my webhosts control panel I created a second blank database. I tried to use the data sync tool in Navicat but it requires all source fields to be mapped to corresponding destination fields, and because the destination is a blank database I couldn't proceed. With sqlyog it handles structure sync when doing a data sync with no fuss. So I tried to use the Structure SYnc tool, I pressed “Compare” and there was no feedback from the software, it just sat there with no progress indicator. I eventually got this to work (though second time around I can't get it to work again!) and then proceeded to do a data sync. Even though all the tables have index fields it refused to continue complaining it must have index fields. The indexes show fine in sqlyog, but no indexes are listed in Navicat. I tried the same test with a Drupal database and had the same issue. I sent off an disheartened message to Navicat support and they confirmed the limitation and said they're open to suggestions. Fixing the sync tools would be a start.

Please tell me you're considering making a native Mac version of Sqlyog? I promise to sign over my first new born if you do.

PS I see there's one day left on the 50% off offer. My license expired a week or two ago. Does this apply to upgrades also? And is it on top of the upgrade discount offer I received around the time it lapsed? I've half way between persevering with Navicat (and heaven forbid buying the darn thing) or play around getting Sqlyog working on the Mac.

I think it is a pretty good idea – except for that I'd prefer SQL wildcards (% and _) instead of windows wildcards.  Also then a “literal wildcard” should be escaped as according to MySQL escaping standard.  domaninuser_database must then be entered as 'domainuser_database' and domainuser_backsash should be entered as 'domainuser_backs\ash' or even maybe 'domainuser_backs\\ash' (there is double escaping in a LIKE-clause).  Just in case that the wildcard is used as a litteral.

I think vastly more windows/unix/mac users know about (and at least are more comfortable with) the * and ? wildcards compared with sql wildcards.

Also, and more importantly, * and ? are more suitable because they can't appear in database/table names, where as SQL wildcards can and often do. Given that mysql database/table names are reflected in the name of the files they reside in on the server, it makes sense to use the same wildcard convention that filenames use. Otherwise people would be escaping characters all over the place and this would add unneccessary confusion.

No, had no need before this issue. Was working nicely a few days ago.

Thanks. So looks like a config issue then.

What is the MySQL version you are connecting too?

Prior to v4.0x, it will list all the databases when

    Code:
    show databases

is executed. After that, only the databases that you have to access to will be displayed.

You can specify which database needs to be added to Object Browser by specifying them in Database(s) field in the connection window.

    [post=”6984″]<{POST_SNAPBACK}>[/post]

The version of mysql that my webhost is currenty using is 4.0.25 according to phpmyadmin. I just had a look at a backup (sql dump) I made one week ago, at a time when I definately did not see this issue, and the header says version 4.0.24. So it looks like my webhost has upgraded/patched mysql since it was last working correctly. Either 4.0.25 has introduced a bug or something mucked up the config/security on their server. Another possibility is that SQLyog doesnt behave (or vice versa) with 4.0.25 but I doubt that because I don't see how any php code in SQLyog's HTTP tunneler file could expose all other customer's databases.

Anyway, I've reported it to my webhost and now it's up to them to fix it. As I write this post the problem is still there.

I have specified the database in the connection now, so that'll save me having to scroll through a zillion databases now. Thanks for the tip.

Can I make a feature request (assuming it's possible to implement):- Can I use a wild card in the database name? My webhost prefixes every database name with the account name, so it would be very handy to specify “accname_*” for the database and have just these databases listed. Eg “accname_blah1” and “accname_blah2” would get shown within SQLyog. I can imagine this being useful in other situations too.

Thanks for trying that out and confirming there's a bug. Hopefully that's enough for the developers to work with. In the meantime I'll just get into the habit of running the sync tool again after I've done a sync to confirm nothing is left outstanding.

I created a test copy of the database on both local and remote servers and tried it out again and was able to reproduce the problem. I've put a sql dump of both databases here.

    Rgds, Ant

    edit:

steps to reproduce: Download the zip file (contains two files). apply old.sql to remote mysql server and new.sql to local mysql server. Run “Structure Synchronisation Tool”. Select the local database on the left-hand side, and select the remote database on the right-hand side. Click “Compare Now” (I use HTTP Tunneling so this step takes a few seconds). Observe that all four tables are automatically ticked. In the tree on the left-hand side, expand the nodes and observe that each table has one or two fields shown in grey (these are the fields to be dropped from the tables). Click “Sync (Clipboard)”, and paste into your favourite text editor. Observe that only the first “alter table” includes the “drop” clause!

    http://www.webyog.com/forums/index.php?sho…c=1622&hl=arrow

here we agreed that you should recognize the difference between “execute query” and “execute all queries”. Queries are seperated with “;”.  F5 only executes ONE.”execute all queries” is available as the double green arrow icon or from the menu.

.. but now you write that it is the SQL generated that is buggy.

Can you paste in the table definitions (no data needed)?

    [post=”6972″]<{POST_SNAPBACK}>[/post]

That's correct, but obviously I now know about the “execute all queries” option and I was using that on this occasion. It does indeed sound similar, but this is a completely different issue this time around. I since noticed someone else on this forum had exactly the same issue too FWIW. I can email/pm you the database (3k x 2) but would prefer not to post on here.

Unfortunately I cannot share the structure of the database.

However, I did create a test database with over 200 tables, and have had no problems making the Structure Sync tool work on that database.

I've tried creating new tables, deleting them, adding/changing/removing columns — everything, and I can't duplicate the problem I was having on the actual database.  Even the database I was having problems with works now. 😮

If I can figure out why it wasn't working before, I will post here right away.

    Thanks for all your help!

Well I've just experienced this issue too, and my database (early stages) only has four tables and a handful of fields in each.

    I'm using v4.1 Enterprise (Trial).

I started a thread before I spotted this one, here it is:

ps: @Ritesh I'm happy to email you my database (before and after) so long as you dont share it with anyone else. Let me know if you want it.

I don't think I agree.  On the opposite I hate alle these dialogue boxes that M$ has trained us to think is a natural thing.

Think we'll have to agree to disagree on that one then. I bet there's quite alot of people that install SQLyog, paste in a couple of lines of SQL (eg as a result of using SQLyog's sync tool), and haven't realised about the “execute all queries” option and expect F5 to do the job.

This consumed about 20 mins of my time before I noticed the database wasn't as expected and the reason why. Ticking a checkbox and dismissing a dialog takes all of 3 seconds, and only needs to be done once after installation of SQLyog.

Nothing wrong with a little hand holding, especially as there'll be plenty people migrating from query tools that only have the single execute option.

Thanks again Peter for your quick reply. I nipped back on here to confess that I had overlooked the “Execute All Queries” option to find you had already answered my question!

I'd like to propose the following to improve the user friendlyness of SQLyog (or just to accommodate clueless developers like myself!):

When someone presses F5 (or hits the single green arrow), and several queries exist, show a dialog with a note along the lines of “You have entered several queries. You can run all these queries by pressing F8 or by clicking the double arrowed button. Run currently selected query anyway?”. With yes/cancel buttons, and a “Do not show this again” tickbox option.

If someone enters or pastes in several queries, then I suspect in the majority of cases they expected all of them to be executed.

    Thanks, Ant

ps: thanks for the overview of InnoDB and MyISAM. I suspect that the foreign key feature allows you to link tables together. I'm still in the learning process so I'll be sure to read up on that.

This is a matter of taste, I belive.

But there is no option now to have more connections in same window.

Work is going on for a cross-platform version (Win+mac OS-X + Linux).  As far as I know this one will have a “tree of connections”.  But a fully functional and stable version will be no less than a year.

Development time I believe depends also on how many people buy the current version of the program.  There is no revenue with the cross-platform version development.

    [post=”6921″]<{POST_SNAPBACK}>[/post]

Thanks Peter. I at least plan to purchase this. The HTTP tunneling and sync tools are worth the money alone.

I look forward to the Mac OS X version. I hope to switch to that platform sooner or later – all depends on how Apple's OS X intel port pans out (i.e. I hope they release a generic version that I can install on my Sony Vaio laptop, otherwise I'll probably just buy their first intel-based laptop).

Incidentally I'll be sure to plug sqlyog to the MacCast when it gets ported over. This is a podcast with several thousand listeners, and you can download each mon/wed/fri show as an mp3 from maccast.com, or via subscribtion within iTunes v4.9.

    Cheers, Ant
