Google celebrates the 4th birthday of the dinosaur minigame by explaining its creation
Play a special version of the game!
If you use Google Chrome, surely you have ever played the curious minigame / easter egg of the T-Rex dinosaur. Yes, the one that comes out when you try to enter somewhere and you don't have an Internet connection. Well, did you know that this September 7 turns 4? To celebrate, Google made a blog post that explains a bit about its conception.
In a talk to celebrate the game's 4th anniversary and Google Chrome's 10th anniversary, developers Edward Jung, Sebastien Gabriel, and Alan Bettes explained how they came up with the game:
"The idea of an" endless runner "game as an easter egg within the" offline "page was born in early 2014. It is a game that dates back to the" prehistoric era "when we did not have Wi-Fi. cactus and desert were part of the first iteration of the 'offline' page, while the visual style is a nod to our tradition of pixel-art styling in Chrome's bug artwork."
Originally, things were very different from how we see them now. For example, there was an idea of falling meteorites; Furthermore, the design of the dinosaur was different and even roared. However, he decided on a simpler final design.
Another interesting nod is that the project was originally called "Project Bolan", in honor of Marc Bolan, lead singer of the 70s rock band T-Rex game.
A very popular game
You would think that as the years went by, fewer and fewer people would play the minigame, as Internet connections are more and more reliable. However, the developers confirmed that more than 270 million games are played each month, especially from countries with unstable or very expensive connections, such as Mexico, Brazil, India or Indonesia.
And could someone finish the game? Theoretically yes. The team confirmed that the game is scheduled to last 17 million years, roughly the length of time the fearsome dinosaur existed in real life.
Celebrating T-Rex's 4th birthday
To celebrate the fourth anniversary of the popular dinosaur game, this October 7 you can play a special version in which, if you grab the cake at the beginning, our Jurassic friend uses a colorful birthday hat throughout the game. To play it, simply disconnect your internet or type chrome://dino/ in the address bar.
