      Hi,

I currently use a mysql database located on an ensim virtual private server (VPS). Is it possible to connect to a mysql database in this way. I asked the support desk at my ISP and they seemed to think that I was talking double dutch or something coz they didn't have a clue about odbc and the like.

All I got was “Its usually localhost isn't it?” Which may give a clue as to the level of technical ability the firstline support my ISP has.

      Can anyone help me?

      Kind regards,

      Rob

      Greetings

Yes!!! You can connect to your remote server using SQLyog provided you have correct permissions.

Most users have problems connecting to dbs operating on ISP servers though…

I'll go back to my ISP and see if I can find someone who knows what the hell they are talking about!

I blame myself of course in that I should have asked questions like this b4 I signed a contract with them!

      Thanks for your help.

ps. Even although I havent managed to use it yet your software looks awesome! Hopefully I'll get the opportunity to use it soon! 🙂

Don't forget to ask them whether they allow direct connection to MySql, otherwise you may have to find ways to tunnel SQLyog to MySql!

      He means SSH Tunneling 😀

Many SQLyog users use SSH Tunneling to connect to MySQL securely.

If you are using Windows to connect, I suggest you use PuTTY, a free SSH tool that will connect to MySQL securely.

PuTTY, latest version is 0.53b (is pretty stable and works great!)

      PuTTY: A Free Win32 Telnet/SSH Client

David Carlson has a great mini-tutorial on SSH in the MySQL.com documentation:

2.6.2.4 Connecting to a Remote MySQL from Windows with SSH

2.6.2.4 Connecting to a Remote MySQL from Windows with SSH
