I have an existing MSSQL db I need to migrate to MySQL.
the MSSQL is on a remote server. not local. I will be creating a new MySQL db on a different remote server for the translated data to go into.
the MSSQL db is relatively small. it's for a forum that barely gets used. but too large to download unless as a compressed .bak file which I'm pretty sure is useless. I do have a .bak file on the local computer if there is something that can be done with that.
I'm pretty sure I use Powertools/Import External Data.
somehow. I thought I just point it to the source and the destination, then hit the Wookiee button.
I can't figure out what the first dialog box is for. connecting to the remote MSSQL db? creating a local mirror of the remote db in whatever format I choose? I don't know. I can't get it to connect to the remote MSSQL db if that's what I'm supposed to do.
after failing that, the next dialog box asks to connect to a database, I think to put the data into. it wants to connect to a MySQL db, which I presume may be the fresh new one I create for migration.
how is this supposed to work? what am I doing wrong? what should I be doing in the first place?

You need to
1) install the MS SQL Server ODBC driver (if it is not already – with recent Windows it is as default).
2) Go to Control Panel .. Administration .. Data Sources and configure a DSN instance to point to your SQL Server
3) From 'Import External Data' select 'Any ODBC Source' and the name of the DSN.
What is a ' Wookiee button' ??
