      Hi Ritesh,

      I was not surprised to learn that SQLyog now is available “at an Introductory price of $49”. To launch the program as “free software” (meaning more exactly proprietory software, available temporarily without charge) was certainly the smartest way to get the program well known and tested.

      I think it is an excellent program and I have included it in an administrative package I have developed for a local branch of a non-profit organisation. Presently SQLyog is installed on a number of win98 computers sharing one MySQL server.

      To use SQLyog 3.51 a site licence fee of USD 495 has to be paid. I estimate that my system will be used of about 10 additional local branches rising the total licence fee to USD 4950.

      I conclude that this is not a fair price for getting permission to use 480kb of code (WITHOUT WARRANTY OF ANY KIND) to perform something that (maybe not so elegantly) can be done by MySQL Control Center or phpMyAdmin for free.

      The disadvantage of the pricing policy you have chosen is that it prevents use of the program without any benefit for you. Your revenue from selling the program will not be affected at all by letting us continue the free use of the program.

      I am not objecting to licensing SQLyog. If you pay a licence fee for MySQL it seems logical that you should do it also for SQLyog. MySQL AB have adopted the simple principle that a licens fee is charged if you don't comply with the GNU GPL. Couldn't you have done the same?

      Another way (inferior in my opnion) would be to make a “light” free version of the program. Have you considered that?

      480KB of code is one of the features of SQLyog. Not many software can pump in so much of functionality in 480KB. As far as warranty is concerned, we can assure you of immediate bug-fixes for critical issues ( if any ). SQLYog is used by thousands of MySQL developers, has undergone 1.8 years of development and 11 releases ( major + minor ) – it is a fairly stable product!
