Character encoding Feature

I think this SQLyog is a powerful and useful tool.

So, if you add this feature, I'm sure more and more people around the world will start using this.

I want to have a “Character encoding(Character Conversion)” feature like Internet Explorer or other browsers. I can not get correct kanji characters in Japanese by SQLyog. Because, database server is stored in “UJIS” encoding code, and Windows client is “Shift-JIS” encoding.

Let me explain the reason.

Traditionally, MS-DOS and Windows have used “Shift-JIS” encoding in Japan.

But in the UNIX and LINUX world (and ISP's MYSQL), “UJIS (EUC-JP)” has been used as a major encoding.

Recently, “UTF-8” came into this situation….

So as a general case, Japanese programmers are using “UJIS” code for MYSQL(in the server), and client conputers are using “Shift-JIS” (because, it's Windows!). When I use phpMyAdmin, there is no problem because Browser's encoding feature will convert different encodings into Windows' code.

(This problem can be applied to most of the software made in outside of Japan though…)

But I love to use SQLyog because of the synchlonization feature. It can synchronize Japanese data properly.

There may be similar situation in other languages….

Or, at least, if SQLyog has a plug-in feature, there may be people who would like to add character encoding features.

If you just need to store the Japanese data (no sorting, no SQL operation using 'LIKE'.. ), you don't need to configure my.ini or my.cnf. (“character_set latin1 ” is OK.)

I'm not sure whether English Windows(And IE or FireFox) can display Japanese Characters without installing any softwares. But my IE6 in Japanese Windows XP can display Chinese, Korean or Thai …. without installing any fonts or software.

If you want to write (input ) Japanese Characters, you can make use of

Global IME you can download freely from Microsoft.

See the attached “test.sql”. I stored Japanese Numbers(1234567890 in large letters) and Days of the week in three encodings. (UJIS, SJIS, UTF-8).
