My site's hosting company does not allow remote connections to MySQL unless they come from a fixed IP address, for security reasons. Does this mean that I would not be able to use SQLyog with my remote database if my ISP does not give me a fixed IP address?

In case this is not clear I've pasted below some messages from my hosting's support forum.

      Thanks in advance.

      ANSWER TO SOME QUESTION

Yes, you need to ask support to give you a new MySQL user for remote access.

To get this we will need to know:

      – The database you need remote access to

      – The fixed IP of the PC which will be accessing the database.

We only add remote access for someone with a fixed (non changing) IP address.

      QUESTION

      Hello,

I can understand why you would want to restrict access to static-IP addresses for remote access. However, I currently use blueyonder broadband with dynamic IP allocation.

Generally, the IP address doesn't change (certainly not in the last 6 months) but it's always possible that it will change. Does this means I wouldn't be able to register my IP address with you ?

Is it possible to use a service like no-ip.com – where you can setup a hostname (eg. bingo.no-ip.info) which they will point to your 'dynamic' IP address ?

Unfortunately, remote access to the mySQL database is a major requirement of one of the websites we are hosting at present.

      ANSWER TO PREVIOUS QUESTION

      Unfortunately no-ip.com wouldnt work.

We are strict about applying remote priveleges only to static IP's.

Its for the security of your own data. Sorry.

      Either:

get a shell account fomr them and use ssh to tunnel mysql. (not bloody likely if they won't give you access to a mysql database) or

      Get a new ISP.

Sorry, wish I had better news.

You may try to route through a machine that has a fixed IP address.
