It's been two years since the last time I was on the hunt for a good solid MySQL gui, and I decided to check out if SQLyog has improved any in these two years. It looks like it has, but there are still some issues that will make me not use this program.
The first thing is something I pointed out two years ago on this very forum: maximizing the application window on startup. Seriously, I can't understand how a software developer is incapable of maximizing his application on startup. It's totally unfathomable to me. 😮
Other settings that the application is incapable of remembering, like that fact that I DON'T want to show the sql editor by default. It also can't remember which of the five tabs I'm interested in when I click a table. It will always show the (at that point) useless “Result” tab. I want the “Table data” tab when I click a table.
If people have to customize the GUI on EVERY RESTART of the program, it will lead to a reluctancy to use the program at all.
Also, I can't find a setting to change the default column widths. I'd like the whole text to display in all columns but blob fields and such. I mean, what's the point of truncating the display of a varchar 100 column to 30 characters (or whatever is shown) when there's plenty of horizontal space?
This application has so much potential, but at the same time an unprecedented number of annyoing beginners mistakes and bugs.

I sort of agree, however if anyone wants a work around, here it is.
1. Rightclick the shortcut for SQLyog
2. Select properties
3. Use the dropdown option “Run” and select “Maximized”

In the 5.2 tree we fixed the issue, that the program does not remember it MAXIMIZED state.
Now if it is maximized when closing, it will open as maximized next time.
